Herbie’s 2007 River: The Joni Letters became the first jazz album in 44 years to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. His compositions “Chameleon” and “Maiden Voyage” are also considered classics in the jazz world and beyond. His 1983 Grammy winner “Rockit,” from the platinum-selling Future Shock, went on to become an anthem in the world of breakdancing and early hip-hop culture, cited by many major hip-hop artists as their original inspiration. He became a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and his innovations during this period are still studied by jazz musicians the world over. Hancock’s debut album, Takin’ Off, included “Watermelon Man,” the first of many top-ten hits. Born in Chicago, he made his way to New York to join Donald Byrd’s band. Fourteen-time Grammy winner Herbie Hancock is an internationally renowned pianist and composer who has been an integral part of the jazz scene since the sixties.
